ellis alden vineyards - our land

Ellis Alden Vineyards is part of a 4,000-acre estate in the Alexander Valley viticultural area along the sun-drenched western slopes and valleys of the Mayacamas Mountains.

We created Ellis Alden Vineyards by selecting the 200 acres of the estate best suited for growing premium Bordeaux Red and Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

Because it is located within a large estate, Ellis Alden Vineyards enjoys a pristine growing environment, isolated from potentially negative pathogens. We plant our grapes 1,400 feet above sea level, well above the fog line and naturally sheltered from wind and frost.

Dry hot days and bracingly cold nights contribute to optimal growing conditions for Bordeaux Red grapes. Our vines bloom two weeks later than vines at lower elevations, offering natural protection from the late spring frosts and rain that can threaten other area vineyards. Veraison occurs two weeks later than on the valley floor, so maturation takes place during the ideal cooler fall days. This "hang time" results in Ellis Alden Vineyards' signature, fully-developed varietal characteristics.
